Hello,

I resolved the problem. Some how in the process of tinkering to get 
Ubuntu to see my Windows network, my workgroup got added to the line in 
the hosts file that shows the assigned name for the ubuntu machine. 
Deleting that fixed it. I was always able to get to the knternet, I 
just couldn't do anything with apt-get.

Thanks for the mp3 player ideas as well.

Orca absolutely rocks with Firefox!
