I'm uising the most recent version of FF 3 dated 2008-01-25 but I
think I have most of this mess figured out.  Thanks to Joanie's help
last evening, we concluded that the atk / at-spi stuff was some how
corrupt on my machine.  I rebuilt and installed all those packages and
it seems to be better.  However, I'm not completely out of the woods
yet.  Whenever I go to www.gmail.com and login with my
account/password, it goes silent again and I get some spoken messages
later on about "Internal frame." Not sure what internal frame means
but it apparently means trouble for me.:)
