Hi.  The beep means gdm is waiting for you to login.  You won't get a startup sound until you actually log in and
enable system sounds.  You can get gdm to play a sound instead of just beeping the speaker, but that will require editing files or running gdmsetup.
Gdmsetup is a GUI app, so you will need Gnome working in order to use it.
