Orca orca crash on start-up

Hello,
I'm running a new feisty install.  After I log in, I can start orca, but 
it crashes after speaking the welcome message and the "entering focus 
tracking" message.  
I tried running it from a text console, but it was looking for a DISPLAY 
environment variable.  To what value should this variable be set?  

I'm running brltty 3.72 and did get braille output for a few seconds 
before orca stopped.
