Hi Will,
the second symbolic link wasn't there; I've created it, no difference.
I get the same error messages.
In the output message of the make procedure I found a message saying that 
there's no file -lespeak. What kind of file is this? Maybe an error in the 
install script?
I use Ubuntu Edgy with Espeak 1.18.
