you can check which version of orca you are running by opening up a text 
terminal alt+f2, and type gnome-terminal
once the terminal is loaded type: orca -v
you should be able to hear orca anouncing the version number.

regarding your problem about a foreign firefox, maybe try sudo make 
uninstall
no idea if that target is in the makefile, but just guessing.
