Did you get the less than symbol in there?  If you forget that, which I
sometimes do, you get exactly that behavior.

Regardless I just checked in a fix that does two things:

1. Respects the key echo setting of the user.  In other words, if you
have key echo by word enabled and do not have key echo by character
enabled, you should not hear characters being echoed in password
entries.  To me an entry is an entry is an entry. <smile>  If y'all
disagree, let me know and I will restore it so that you always here
characters echoed in password entries.

2. Says "star" (or the localized word for the asterisk character)
instead of "black circle" when echoing what gets inserted as you type in
a password entry.

Please let me know if it works for you as you'd expect/want.
