Try listening to MM with

dbus-monitor --system
"type='signal',sender='org.freedesktop.ModemManager'"

and making sure MM is emitting the right signal when the access
technology changes to LTE.  That would be the "AccessTechnology" of the
org.freedesktop.ModemManager.Gsm.Network interface.  If so, then the
problem is in the applet, obviously.  If not, then there's something
else in MM.
