How to configure NetworkManager to connect to a virtual network interface?

I'm trying to find a way to connect to a wireless network using a
virtual network interface. I was able to create virtual interfaces but
i'm not able to configure NetworkManager to connect via that
interface. It only connects through the available physical network
interfaces.
