I have an 860 and it works fine, did you install the firmware (I think
this is still needed on 9.04)?

# Download the firmware from
http://www.sierrawireless.com/resources/faq/PC_Card/AirCard775/Aircard_Linux.tar
# Extract SW_8xx_SER.dat and rename it to SW_7xx_SER.cis
# Copy the SW_7xx_SER.cis to /lib/firmware
