It seems i made a mistake.

I found that this does not enable alt-sends-escape:

  XTerm*eightBitInput: true
  XTerm*altSendsEscape: true


However, this does:

  XTerm*eightBitInput: false
  XTerm*altSendsEscape: true


and this too:

  XTerm*eightBitInput: true
  XTerm*altSendsEscape: true
  XTerm*metaSendsEscape: true
