Open menu options -> configuration..., uncheck 'use internal editor'.
This will use an external editor when you press F4.
To define which editor should be used there are different ways.
- have a look into the file ~/.mc/bindings to define a editor based
on the file type
- set the environment variable EDITOR to your preferred editor before
you start mc
