I don't know the answer and I have not tried to change colors, but I can
guess what someone will ask-- are you using MC in a virtual console,
xterm window, or remotely?  What version?  Compiled with ncurses or
slang? (see 'mc --version').

The actual font of the characters is beyond MC's control; it uses
whatever font the terminal provides. But I think you are talking about
what colors are used. That can be changed in MC's configuration files.
The help text about changing colors ('F1', 'contents', scroll down to
'colors') tells how to do it, but I don't see a list of the defaults. 

Some applications come with a dummy configuration file that contains all
the defaults.  Would that be a good idea for MC?  When I want to change
a configuration file, I find it easier to edit an example than to create
entries from scratch.
