Can you import setuptools and pkg_resources inside a python console? If you
can't then you don't have everything installed properly that you need. If
you can then something else is up here.

What's your distribution btw? I think most people here do ubuntu so it would
be interesting to see if we have any problems with other distros,
particularly regarding dependency issues.
