it's ok I worked it out the link
http://www.gtkmm.org/docs/gtkmm-2.4/docs/tutorial/html/sec-menus-examples.html 
did it, I had a hard time  modifying it to fit glade/libglademm, but the
trick was to get rid of the glade generated main menu
and then I was nearly home thanks José,
