Yes, looks like that was the problem!  I had the Fink version of gtk2
(2.6.10) and pango (1.2.1) installed.  I removed those and used
MacPorts to install version 2.12.2 of gtk2 and version 1.18.3 of
pango.  After that, the Gtk2 perl module (1.162) compiled without a
hitch.  Thanks for your help!!

Which version of the gtk+ and pango libraries do you have installed?  If
you have pango >= 1.10 but gtk+ <= 2.8, the Cairo Perl module will not
be pulled in but xs/PangoCairo.xs will still be compiled.
