very newbie question

I am modifying an app that uses a tree object. At present when there is 
a row selection it performs a gtk_entry_get_text(widget) call.
I wish to change it.
Is it possible to there is a that return the row/column count that was 
clicked rather than getting the text?

Again I am a newbie to gtk.
