Minutes of the GTK+ Team Meeting - 2008-07-22

= gtk irc team meeting minutes - 2008-07-22 =

* Status of Gtk+-2.14 release, API freeze
- as decided at GUADEC, 2.14 release by end of august/begin of september
- minor API and changes still pending
- API frozen and feature frozen by next release
- behdad points out pango dependency on new cairo/pixman
- gtk-doc support for GSEAL needed
- GtkAdjustment accessors
- IconEntry API might slip to 2.15, depending on bratsche schedule
- non-API blockers:
  ~ GIO inotify fixes (tbzatek)
  ~ FileChooser resize (federico)
  ~ non-local files support in the FileChooser (carlosg)
ACTION: target and API/feature frozen release in two weeks, then a new release
        if needed before 2.14

* Feedback on the Guadec meeting, 2.16 schedule
- postponed until the GUADEC minutes are sent to the list (kris)
- 2.16 release roughly after GUADEC 2009
- more precise schedule after the 2.16 features list is decided

* Sense feedback on "calling" the ABI-breaking 3.0 version 2.99.0
- original plan (hackfest): 3.0 is ABI incompatible, 3.1/.2 gets new features
- possible alteration: 2.9x is ABI incompatible, 3.0 gets new features
- branch out for 3.0 early to land features and study the eventual API/ABI
  fallout on the 3.x cycle
ACTION: make an ABI incompatible 2.9x release dropping all the deprecated
        API and with the structures sealed, branch for 3.0 early and
        land features for a 3.0.0 release

* What is the prospect of creating a spin-off libgtk3deprecated that's not
  maintained by the Gtk+ core team
- best effort only: gtk2.x -> gtk3.x + libgraveyard migration might still
  require some degree of porting
- move whole deprecated widgets from 2.x (clist/ctree, optionmenu,
  itemfactory, etc.)
- reimplement deprecated functions using the stable API wherever possible
- an eventual libglib3deprecated depends on the glib3 tasks list

* Feature roadmap for 3.x
- what features should land and what is the time frame for them?
- start gathering the wishlist and the contributors
ACTION: set up a wiki page for the wishlist and discuss on the mailing list
