needs help with libraris

I have tried looking at the gtk/gnome documentation but still have problems. I think there is just something 
I am not doing.
From the gtk/faq I know I need to download the following libraries:
This is what I have now and TRIED to compile them in this order.

1-pkgconfig0.15.0
2-make 3.80
3-libpng1.2.5, jpeg-6b, tiff v.3.6.1
4-freetype2.1.9
5-fontconfig2.2.96
6-libiconv1.9.1
7-gettext0.14.1
8-glib 2.4.6
9-pango1.4.1
10-atk1.6.1
11-gtk+2.4.9

Is there anything else that I need? When I was compiling all of these libraries I used
./configure
make
make install

I tired doing all of these and still unsuccessful. Am I doing more than needed? Is there something I am 
missing?
