custom widget implementation.

Hi all,
I need to implement a text editing widget similar to gtktextview, I know 
that this is done by inheriting an existing gtkwidget and extending it. 
However, I need to implement such a widget from scratch.
The problem is that I don't know how to draw the widget itself on the 
screen. 
I mean that the tutorial is talking about extending the current widgets, 
But i had a look at gtktextview, but didn't find any rendering API, How 
is the widget itself drowed ..... ?
