g_object_new() and g++

Perhaps you can use gcc to compile and g++ to link. 
For example, I use the following makefile fragment 
in this old machine:

COMPILE = gcc -g -Wall -ansi
LINK = g++

$(EXE): $(GAMGI_o)
        $(LINK) -o $@ $^ $(PATH_L) -Wl,-Bdynamic $(LIBS)

%.o : %.c $(GAMGI_h)
        $(COMPILE) -c $(PATH_H) $< -o $@
