line plot

I'm doing line plot using 2 different columns:
1 column as date, the other is value of something; stock price.
I wondered how the x-y axis arrangement exists, as both axis should 
provide data format but it has only the y-axis. Thinking, if  x-axis 
data are extracted from date, the format is not something like ##/##/## 
but the integer number, in stead. What should I do?
