It had a few files in it with ':' in the file name.  I solved the problem by renaming the files as I copied them over and made a note to myself to rename them back if they're ever needed.  By the way, I'm delighted to be completely linux now.  I've got office, graphics, finance, internet, wireless working great on a much more responsive laptop. Next stop - Samba.  (Excuse my dumping, I'm just having a good time and appreciating your help!)
