dobey tracked down the metacity issue and found it to be caused by
metacity not using gnome-autogen.sh (for which I blame havoc or jamesh
;-), and the hand-rolled version metacity had only checked for
AC_PROG_INTLTOOL instead of IT_PROG_INTLTOOL.
It appears that the gcalctool and gdm problems can be fixed by using a
decent shell (i.e. /bin/bash instead of Solaris' sh) though that's an
ongoing conversation in IRC at the moment...
(dobey can clear things up if I've misinterpreted anything, as this
auto-voodoo is still beyond me)
Cheers,
Elijah
