I think you're putting more into the word 'mentioned' than I originally 
intended. I agree with you that he might not be the person to drive or 
control GNOME, but at least he did hell of a lot for the platform. Because 
beeing GNOME the standard DE on Ubuntu atracted lots of users, which
gave feedback, started to do their pygtk experiments (that was exactly the
way I got in touch with GNOME), etc.
