[Gimp-developer] question about "... [something] (or alpha) ..." phrase (translation related)

There are several strings that use the "(or alpha)" as an addition to
other things. For example "add a background to the selected region (or
alpha)", or "fill the selected region (or alpha)", etc.

Question: this alpha will *always* refer to a channel (alpha channel),
or can be also something else ?
