Hi,
IMHO gedit should have a GUI option where one can select the encoding of the .txt file (like browsers do). I'm russian, so I have to use something else instead of gedit (it doesn't seem to detect/open correctly windows-1251 files copied from windows).
I understand that there might be (afaik IS) a command line option to start gedit with such and such encoding but imho it would be too cumbersome. The KDE based editor "kedit" does have such a GUI option.
