Never had this problem. My mail provider uses Dovecot server.

You should check which mail server Fastmail is using. Geary should support the following:

Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Outlook.com, and popular IMAP servers (Dovecot, Cyrus, Zimbra, etc.)

According to Wikipedia, fastmail uses Cyrus:

it tells you to check the list of issues.

The simple search returns only two general issues.

The advanced search lists only a fixed issue related to cyrus:

You may have found a new bug or there's some misconfiguration.

If you want to be helped you should find some information in the log file:

geary --log-network > geary.log

The log file should not be sent to this list, as it may contain private information.

Ideally, find the relevant information and paste it here. Otherwise you may send the file to a developer interested in debugging your problem. Not me, I'm not a developer :-)
