Re: [gdm-list] gdm-list Digest, Vol 120, Issue 5

There is a problem with gdm and Wayland though.

Wayland deletes the part of X11 (Xtrans)fer that does transparent access to other X11 hosts (on the same
desktop, or desktop within a desktop).

Because of this, gdm will not display other hosts unless somehow the “Xorg compatible feature” is setup and
working with gdm (sorry i’m unfamiliar with all the requirements to get that all on login screen before
light).

There’s a 2nd problem, Wayland offers Xorg compat but Xorg deletes compat. with many video cards, and proper
Xtrans (it’s orderless), meaning some old but expensive apps do not work in Xorg but still work in XFree86.
While with Xorg one might be able to get around that (various lib tricks or fixes), with Wayland the only
having the original source of the app would help: but these sources are insanely expensive and likely simply
will not compile using “free unix” without tons of work.

On the other hand Xorg maybe could be fixes, but no-one is trying - only more breakage is arriving) and apps
work somewhat with it.

Meanwhile XFree86 and Xorg said by Wayland and Xorg to not support direct rendering - but this is an obvious
like. See the source - any X11 feature that is supported by hardware is directly steered to the hardware and
they know it: they were are lying.

Greetings,

I hope I've identified the right mailing list to address my issue.

I've setup a new machine using arch linux. By default gnome uses wayland on
my arch linux install. Using that constellation I can't make gdm show desktop
icons.

I was told to switch back to Xorg in this thread
<https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=218791>. This works once after
startup. But if I logoff or suspend the machine, the desktop hides the icons
again.

Is that a known issue or is it just me standing in the way? ;)
What could I do to track this down? Enable gdm debugging?

These are my machines settings:

$ gdm --version
GDM 3.22.1

$ cat /etc/gdm/custom.conf
# GDM configuration storage

[daemon]
# Uncoment the line below to force the login screen to use Xorg
WaylandEnable=false

[security]

[xdmcp]

[chooser]

[debug]
# Uncomment the line below to turn on debugging
#Enable=true

$ gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.desktop.background | grep show-desktop-icons
org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons true

$ gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.nautilus.desktop | grep volumes-visible
org.gnome.nautilus.desktop volumes-visible true

Regards,

Since GDM is not involved in displaying the desktop
icons, it does not *sound* like a GDM issue.

Okay, that makes sense. So your login was using wayland,
and switching it to use X allows your Gnome session to
display the icons.

But if I logoff or suspend the machine, the desktop hides the icons
again.

Is that a known issue or is it just me standing in the way? ;)

How are you making GDM start an X session instead of a
Wayland session? are you using the dropdown menu
on the login screen?

Try using `ps aux | grep X` and `ps aux | grep wayland`
to see what process are actually running (both when
you can see the icons and when you can't).

These are my machines settings:

$ gdm --version
GDM 3.22.1

$ cat /etc/gdm/custom.conf
# GDM configuration storage

[daemon]
# Uncoment the line below to force the login screen to use Xorg
WaylandEnable=false

This only effects the login screen and does not effect the
usage of wayland after you log in.
