Thanks for working on this.  I like this solution better.  I applied 
your patch to SVN head.  I think this means that all of your recommended
patches to making GDM work better with more sophisticated PAM modules
have now been applied.  Is this correct, or is there more work to do?

I realize that a separate patch is coming to support multiple entries
in gdmlogin/gdmgreeter.
