F-spot not importing

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and the f-spot 0.8.2-4.

Had some minor problems for a while, now getting more serious. 

When I try to import photos I do not get to open the "import from" dialog in the upper left corner of the import screen. It stays gray and only 1 centimeter long, and does not react to anything. 

Any ideas where to start troubleshooting, or any practical workaround?
