Credentials are required to connect to the destination host

      Hi,
it usually means that there had been some issue logging into the
calendar, which would usually follow with a password prompt, but as
this is an OAuth2 account, which has a token, not a password, then the
code cannot ask for the password and reports this error instead.

You said the error is occasional. Can it be that it works fine after
login, but say an hour a little longer it fails this way? If it's so,
or similar, then it can be due to the token being expired. It had been
addressed only very recently, for the 3.22.0 version:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=761450

I terminated Evo (all processes) and restarted. The message appeared
after about an hour, so it does look like this is the problem. Is there
any chance of the fix being backported to the current version (3.20)?
Most distros won't support 3.22 for several months yet, at a minimum.
