Why not just install Cyrus, store your mail in the mail server, and
access it via IMAP (a standard protocol).  And just be rid of the
how-my-mail-is-stored 'issue'.  Mail should be in a mail server
(IMAP).  

That works for PINE, ThunderBird, Evolution, Mutt, Sylpheed  - never
think about how-my-mail-is-stored ever again.
