8.04 is the LTS release.  8.10 is 1/3 of the way through its 18 month support cycle, superseded by the 
current 9.04.

According to what I thought I saw when I first visited the Ubuntu site a
few weeks ago, 8.10 was listed as the latest LTS release. It's
also what an Ubuntu-experienced friend recommended.
