No, I don't think this did happen the first time I ran Evolution on the
new system.

Is this where you choose 'Session' on the login panel and select
Failsafe Terminal?

Do I do this on the command line by typing $ evolution or something?

Sorry to be a bit unclear about running stuff from the command line but
