A number of Fedora users have been bit by this behavior, even people on
our own Desktop team! Evolution gives no visible indication that you're
in caret mode other than a check mark on a menu.
Epiphany displays "Caret" in the status bar when caret mode is enabled
(again, F7) and I think that's a good example to follow. I plan on
filing a bug about it if there isn't one already.
