As Iain told me yesterday on IRC, he tracked down this issue and even
provided a fix for this. By a quick look at the code, configure foo
actually is broken for the experimental plugins. Following up on this on
the patches list, to get it fixed.

FYI, Iain's patch has been committed to both branches, the stable
gnome-2-14 as well as HEAD.
