yes, it should work(TM). my windows xp box also crashes only randomly.

Heh, but this is open source so we can find the bugs and fix them.

I'm not saying it's guaranteed to work for you, just that I've upgraded
and downgraded many times, never backed up any .gconf data, and never
had a problem.
