[Evolution] (no subject)

I'm running evolution 1.4.6 on RH 9. This has been working fine for
months, the system is always powered on and I'm always logged in as a
user other than root.
Today on going to read email, I noticed that the Send/Receive icon was
greyed out as if mail was being retrieved although only the main
evolution window was showing.
I shutdown evolution and then ran evolution --force-shutdown.
                                                                                
Starting up evolution again, I get the same thing happen. I've tried
logging off and then on again but the same condition occurs.
                                                                                
I can't find any error messages and all other desktop applications still
run. No changes have been made to any system software or applications in
the last few months.
                                                                                
Can anyone provide some pointers so I can get to the bottom of this?
