I've setup an LDAP server which is working fine for searches (either in
the address book or the mailer). But whenever I go into the contacts
section and look at contacts from that server the contacts are empty.

Try hitting the "clear" button on the search bar.

That works. Is that a bug? I didn't have any search criteria in there?

I don't think it's a bug. AFAIK, the concept of LDAP is that it is a
searchable database, not a browseable one - plus you have to consider
that it is a network resource and in many cases contains 1000's of
records. That's why no LDAP clients that I know of do a wildcard search
as the default view, and all have a limit on the number of records that
are retrieved per search (even if the search is a wildcard).
