Do you see those chars correctly, when setting charset to Unicode?
This sounds familiar to me, had similar effects myself which where fixed
in later versions. I am not sure if your 1.4.4 might still have that
bug, but I suggest upgrading to the latest stable version: 1.4.5
Hope, that fixes it. Might be a red herring, though...
