Not sure, but on my system (Mandrake 9.1) default fonts in Evolution and
Mozilla were crappy, too. I solved it by creating a file ~/.gtkrc.mine
with the following content:

--- snipp: ~/.gtkrc.mine ---

style "default"
{
  fontset = "-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*"
}

widget_class "*" style "default"

--- snipp ---

Your ~/.gtkrc-1.2-gnome2 should have an appropriate include line. HTH

...if you're running KDE, sometimes the GTK/Gnome fonts don't work right
until gconfd-2 is up and running (for whatever reason) - so I created a
link to it and slapped it in my ~/home/usernamehere/.kde/Autostart
directory...now all my Evo fonts are exactly the way I like'em WHEN I
run Gnome (or other GTK/Gnome applications...); I reckon the same can be
done with any wm that ain't Gnome...
