You've picked a proportionaly spaced font for your fixed font this is
why you are getting strange rendersing effects. Choose a monospace font
there and things should be much better.

The editor control is a public interface, feel free to write a hook for
your editor of choice. Barring that specific problem reports with the
editor are always welcome.
