This sounds like bug 289 (http://bugzilla.ximian.com/show_bug.cgi?id=289)
and bug 4508 (http://bugzilla.ximian.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4508). I agree
that it is a real problem (That's why I submitted bug 4508 ;-)

Can anything be done about this before 1.0 or is it too late for that?
It's a bug that keeps being reported (search for modal on bugzilla).
