(Forgot to send it to the list...) Make sure that you have a file called .gdkxft in your home that contains a least what is in the readme for gdkxft (near the bottom). Here is mine (attached) with support for AbiWord fonts as well as the TrueType fonts I pulled from my Windows system. Hopefully this will fix your problem.
