I got rid of that as follows:
select the message before it.
shift+click to the message after it to select three messages with the
focus on the third.
Ctrl+click on the 3rd message.
Ctrl+click on the first message.
This puts the focus on the offending message without ever having it
befocused. Then hitting delete and expunge kills it for good.
