I haven't seen Evolution crash while marking all messages as read in
quite some time now.
I have the "27 new thing" because what happens is that I get new mail as
it's marking the original set of messages as read. Is this on IMAP
folders? or local folders?

The reason it's still up is because it's not yet finished - it might be
marking all the pop messages as deleted (it waits till the end) or it
might be syncing your folders.
