Do "killev", then run "html-editor-control" in one terminal and
"evolution-mail" in another. Then wait a few seconds, and run
"evolution" in a third terminal.

Most likely the html-editor-control will exit with some sort of error
message when you try to compose something. If not, evolution-mail
might print out some interesting error message.
