[Evolution] What is the "!" field for?

I am trying to work out what the "!" field is for.  Presumably just to
single out certain messages
for attention?  I couldn't find anything on it in the manual --- perhaps
I missed it?

I was playing around with this and then the two messages I had "!"
seemed to disappear!!  I
don't know what I did to cause this.  I'd like to know more about
precisely what this field does
before I play around any more and lose more messages!
