I would prefer having all my settings on a server somewhere. Somewhat like a
roaming profile in Netscape.
I assume it will be possible via gnome-vfs or some kind of monkier at some
time...

It sould to me like you are describing Nautilus. If shortcuts to folders,
contacts and so on can be draged "outside" Evolution that is.
